Cinco de Mayo may have come three days early to St. Andrew’s Terrace, but team members at the Cambridge long-term care community still provided residents with an authentic fiesta to celebrate Mexico’s national holiday.

The May 2 celebration included Mexican food and music, and everyone dressed in costumes. This was the second year in a row St. Andrew’s Terrace has hosted a Mexican-themed fiesta in honour of Cinco de Mayo.

Life enrichment manager Sara Byma notes the St. Andrew’s Terrace team likes to “bring the celebration to the dining room” for these events, adding this is the second themed dining-room event this year and more will be coming.

Hosting celebrations that tie into meal service ensures all residents can participate, Sara adds.

To give the celebration an authentic feel, team members decorated the dining room with a fiesta theme and everyone dressed in Mexican fiesta costumes. Team members served tangerine-mango punch in little wine glasses with umbrellas which went over well, Sara says.

The dietary team prepared a lunch that included a taco casserole accompanied by corn salad and nachos and salsa. Key lime pie was served for dessert. Salsa music was played, and all team members were invited to join in the fun.

“It was a really fun event,” Sara says.

Cinco de Mayo is held on May 5 and is Mexico’s national holiday. The day honours the Mexican army’s defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, during the French occupation of Mexico.
