When Arjo, the manufacturer of bath tubs, lifts and slings used at Trillium Villa, was searching for front-line staff members from Canadian long-term care homes to visit its factory in Malmo, Sweden to attend a workshop in June, Kim Van Dam says she had the perfect person in mind for the mission.

The administrator at the Sarnia long-term care community recommended personal support worker (PSW) Darlene Abbey for the job. Darlene, she says, has 24 years’ experience working as a PSW at Trillium Villa and is very resident focused.

Kim says Darlene was the perfect candidate to attend the workshop, which focused on providing caregivers information about new tubs and lifts Arjo is manufacturing and getting their feedback on how these new products would benefit residents.

“(Darlene) makes it her personal mission to understand what makes (residents) tick and what is important to them into the delivery of their care,” Kim says in her letter of recommendation.

Darlene also has experience making tub-room recommendations at Trillium Villa, Kim says.

Recently Trillium Villa renovated its tub rooms, and Darlene provided important input on where the ceiling track would best suit the workflow in the space, Kim notes, adding Darlene made other “resident-focused observations” to make the tub rooms both resident-friendly and practical for team members.

“To say Darlene is an amazing person is an understatement,” Kim says. “She is one of the most giving and dedicated people I have ever had the pleasure to have as part of my team.”

Kim’s recommendation was accepted by Arjo, and Darlene went to Malmo June 23-29.
