Waterloo Heights residents and team members had a blockbuster fundraising year in 2018, bringing in a total of $4,166.58 to help support the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington. This was a record-setting year for fundraising at Waterloo Heights, says activity co-director Jacqui Reid.

Every year the Waterloo, Ont. seniors living apartment’s residents choose a charity to raise money for between January and December. Through a wide variety of events, including the bazaars, the annual fashion show, strawberry socials, bake sales and garage sale, money is raised for the charity residents select.

In 2018, the residents chose to donate to the local Alzheimer Society.

“The residents worked hard all year raising money (at the events),” Jacqui tells S&R Today.

“Everyone here knows at least one person who has been affected by Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, so this was a charity many of the residents felt close with.”

The cheque for $4,166.58 was presented to the Alzheimer Society on Feb. 4. Janine Wilson, the public education co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society of Waterloo Wellington, was at Waterloo Heights to accept the donation.

Jacqui says the residents’ fundraising work left an impression on Janine.

“(She) said her heart skipped a beat when she heard how much money had been raised,” Jacqui says.
