Windsor-Tecumseh MP Cheryl Hardcastle (second from left) recently visited Heron Terrace.

Windsor-Tecumseh MP Cheryl Hardcastle visited Heron Terrace March 12 to learn about the great work the Windsor long-term care community is doing and to engage with residents, families and team members about some of the issues and challenges facing the long-term care sector today.

A major issue residents and team members discussed with the MP during her two-hour visit is the need for more staffing to support the acuity and complexity of care required for today’s long-term care residents.

The Heron Terrace team created an information pamphlet to share with the MP about Heron Terrace’s successes and passion for advocating for residents and the long-term care sector, including the team’s involvement in the Ontario Long Term Care Association’s annual Better Seniors’ Care letter-writing campaign.

The Better Seniors’ Care campaign encourages people to send signed letters and e-mails to their local MPP expressing the need for funding to better meet the needs of people living in long-term care communities throughout Ontario ahead of the release of the province’s budget each year.

Heron Terrace administrator Amy Sworik says the meeting was productive, and residents and team members made a positive impression on Ms. Hardcastle.

“She was positively overwhelmed by her audience, the devotion to long-term care and our energy,” Amy says.

The event also sparked possibilities for future collaboration.

“Cheryl and I talked about collaboratively organizing a community event at Heron this summer; I thought this would be nice for our 15th-year anniversary celebration,” Amy says.
