'I think it's wonderful that they gave me the opportunity to do this,' says Suzanne Fleming

Waterloo Heights office manager Suzanne Fleming.

Suzanne Fleming was working as the night cleaning supervisor at Waterloo Heights when she began filling in when the retirement community’s former office manager went on holidays.

Helping out in this capacity would eventually lead Fleming to a full-time role as Waterloo Heights’ office manager when the former manager retired.

Fleming, who began her career at the Waterloo retirement home 10 years ago, says she had no formal office skills when she began filling in for the office manager, but when the full-time position became available four years ago, everyone, including the former manager, had full confidence she could get things done.

“Before (the former office manager) retired she said to me, ‘Suzanne, you could do this job,’ ” Fleming, who had also helped out in the home’s dietary and housekeeping departments, tells S&R Today.

Fleming’s first office duties were answering the home’s main telephone. From there, she kept learning from the people around her until she had mastered her new skills.

She adds that she’s been happy with her position as office manager. While she admits she wasn’t sure at first if she would be able to take the reins as office manager, Fleming credits Waterloo Heights’ management team for believing in her abilities.

“I think it’s wonderful that they gave me the opportunity to do this,” says Fleming, adding that there’s a valuable lesson others can glean from her experience, and that’s that people should believe in their abilities.

“I didn’t think I had the skills to do it, and they gave me that opportunity — they gave me the confidence,” she says.

“I like every aspect of my job.”

Waterloo Heights marketing and activity director Jessie Dietz has known Fleming since coming to the home four years ago.

Dietz says the key strength Fleming brings to the table is her ability to “keep the home going.”

“She’s the glue that keeps us all together, and it’s a big job to fill her shoes when she’s on vacation,” says Dietz.
