Some outstanding teamwork from staff members and families delivered a Canada Day celebration that lit up the sky over Heron Terrace – and residents won’t soon be forgetting the splendour of the evening.

On the evening of July 1, Canada's 152nd birthday, the Windsor long-term care community’s team members and families got together after hours to prepare the fireworks for the evening’s festivities.

The celebration began at 8:30 p.m. “when the blitz of fireworks ignited fizzes and crackles like champagne went up high in the sky with bursts and an array of colours that tickled our residents’ fancy,” explains administrator Amy Sworik, one of the organizers.

“I felt that we could make a big difference in their evening of fun with lighting up the sky with a mini fireworks display for them that has never been done here,” she tells S&R Today.

Amy adds the fireworks were so impressive that some residents from Heron Terrace’s secure neighbourhood wanted to see more of the colourful display and came to the other home areas to watch the presentation with team members.

Comments from residents to team members said it all:

“Wow, these (fireworks) are not cheap; the (staff) must believe in us to pay for this,” said one resident.

“So beautiful; very nice,” said another.

Team members also enjoyed being able to take a break in the evening and were thankful for the event, Amy adds.
