The benefits that animals can bring to people living in long-term care communities is well documented, and the folks living at Trillium Villa are fortunate to have a canine companion who has become a much-loved member of the team.

Meet Ivy, a two-year-old Bichon Frise-Shih Tzu cross owned by administrator Kim Van Dam, who has been coming to the Sarnia long-term care community since she was only eight weeks old. Ivy has made many friends at Trillium Villa over the years, and she can be found most days greeting visitors or simply spending time with residents.

“She loves to look at what is going on from the front office, and her most favourite person in the whole world is our resident Marilyn,” Kim says of Ivy.

“They spend a lot of time together when Ivy comes to work.”

Another resident, Leo, also loves to cuddle with Ivy and she will often sit on his lap. Leo looks for Ivy every day and makes sure she gets to see Marilyn.

Having Ivy at Trillium Villa is making a difference to many, Kim says.

“Residents, family and team members love to see her in the home,” the administrator says.
