Landmark Village residents and team members raised $603 on Sept. 24 in support of the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario’s annual WALK-IT for Parkinson’s campaign.

This is the third year the Sarnia senior living community has hosted a WALK-IT event.

For this year’s event, Landmark Village had a 50-50 raffle and a basket prize raffle with different prizes that raised part of the money.

The team also created a horse race featuring stuffed-animal horses on sticks that competed on a track, says Landmark Village fun co-ordinator Brent Hart. Residents donated $10 each to participate.

To play the game, residents threw dice and the numbers rolled moved their horse ahead on the track.

“The residents had a great time (during the event), and ... we raised a total of $603 – well more than I had anticipated,” Brent tells S&R Today.

To finish the day, residents and team members took a short walk around Landmark Village.

The WALK-IT for Parkinson’s website states that proceeds from the campaign help support services, education, advocacy and research in southwestern Ontario.

According to its website, the WALK-IT for Parkinson’s campaign raised more than $430,000 in 2018.

Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The condition affects an estimated 55,000 Canadians aged 18 and older, according to Statistics Canada.

Money raised from Landmark Village’s WALK-IT event will help people living with Parkinson’s disease in Sarnia-Lambton.

“The nice thing is the money raised stays local,” Brent says.
