Ice-cream social builds community spirit at Village on the Thames

Village on the Thames hosted its first-ever ice-cream social on Sept. 24, and it turned out to be the perfect venue for engaging the local community, says fun co-ordinator Tina Drew.

Bowl of Cream, a local mobile ice-cream vendor, stopped by the Chatham-Kent senior living community that day to supply free ice cream to residents, team members and anyone who happened to stop by the Village on the Thames front courtyard.

The idea for the event was sparked when Jen, the owner of Bowl of Cream, approached Tina and asked if the Village on the Thames would be interested in having an ice-cream social that would be open to the public and offer free ice cream to guests.

Knowing this would be a great way to engage with the local community, Tina agreed and the event turned into a huge success, she says.

“Lots of people came out – we had kids, we had seniors, we had all ages, it was awesome,” Tina tells S&R Today.

Guests could enjoy soft-serve ice cream with their choice of toppings served either in a cone or bowl. Since the front courtyard is an open area facing Grand Avenue, there were many people who stopped in off the street.

Aside from the free ice cream Bowl of Cream provided, there was live music as well as face-painting and sensory activities for children attending.

Since the ice-cream social happened during Chatham-Kent’s 12 Days of Positivity, Captain Positive, a local “superhero” who spreads positivity wherever he goes, was on hand to take photos with guests and give stickers and temporary tattoos to children.

Tina says Jen and the ladies who offered activities during the ice-cream social aim to connect seniors and children at events like this, and the camaraderie involved made for a perfect day of community spirit.

“Everybody came together,” Tina says.
