Heron Terrace hosted a Remembrance Day service for the Windsor, Ont. long-term care community’s residents, some of whom are veterans. It was an event the home’s social worker, Monica Coelho, says team members were honoured to organize.

Prior to the Nov. 11 service, the Heron Terrace front lobby was decorated with poppies that were painted by residents. Team members presented resident veterans with a certificate of appreciation for their dedication to serving Canada.

“We recognized the challenges they faced and overcame to bring peace and freedom to our country,” Monica says.

During the service, administrator Amy Sworik, along with the Heron Terrace life enrichment team, read each veteran’s life story, including the ways they served Canada.

Ashna, a local horn player who has volunteered her musical talents in the past at Heron Terrace, played The Last Post and The Rouse, the bugle calls used by the Canadian Armed Forces, during the service.

Monica says the Heron Terrace Remembrance Day service brought a lot of “shared emotion” for residents and team members.

“It was such an amazing service that was personalized for our veterans, as we are honoured they live with us,” she says.

“These moments are to be cherished and remembered, as these are some of the heroes that provide us with freedom we have today.”
