A pint of good beer is always an essential ingredient to any St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and the Afton Park Place life enrichment team took it a step further this past March 17 and incorporated a beer-tasting activity – that also supported a local business – into the annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities.

Stacy Petrie, the Sarnia long-term care community’s life enrichment manager, paid a visit to the nearby Imperial City Brew House and, with the help of the brewery’s staff, chose several different varieties of beer for residents to sample.

Some of the beers she selected included a chocolate milk-peanut butter porter, a milkshake IPA, Canadian pale ale and, the one many residents liked best, Irish Red Ale.

Stacy also bought cans of Guinness for one resident who is a big fan of the famous Irish stout.

“We gave everybody a shot of each beer and then we talked about the beer, and residents picked their favourite beer and then all the residents got to have a pint,” Stacy tells S&R Today.

Due to restrictions in place to keep residents and team members safe during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, there are currently no large-group programs at Afton Park Place.

Life enrichment team members ran the program by going to the different home areas and engaging with small groups of residents while they were having their meals.

Residents also enjoyed a grasshopper pie, an Oreo-cookie-based dessert made with mint-chocolate filling, as part of the St. Patrick’s Day events.

Of course, no St. Patrick’s Day would be complete without Irish music, so there were plenty of tunes playing throughout the day on March 17.
