When a group of residents and team members from Twin Lakes Village arrived at Shoreside Stables on Oct. 14, they were met by two horses and a staff member at the gates.

From there, the day kept getting better, as the group learned about these amazing animals and got to interact with them one on one.

The horses that greeted everyone at the farm, which is located in Thedford, Ont., 65 kilometres northeast of Sarnia, were a friendly pony named Donut and a Clydesdale horse named Big Will.

Accompanying the horses was Mia, the group's tour guide for the day.

Residents got to feed the horses treats and were shown how to clean their shoes, notes Twin Lakes Village fun co-ordinator Ruby Gallant, who accompanied the residents that day.

After Donut and Big Will were fed, Mia brought out three more horses for residents to meet. Residents were also treated to tours of the farm as well as the indoor riding rink, where a horse and rider were practising jumps.

“The farm has more 60 horses and we were able to see a few of them out in the field as well,” Ruby says, adding a major benefit of visiting Shoreside Stables is that the farm is accessible for people who use walkers and canes.

Mia, Ruby notes, was a wealth of information about the horses and the farm.

“She explained how the farm works and where some of the horses came from,” Ruby says. “It was a beautiful day and the horses were as eager to meet us as much as we were to meet them.”
