Twin Lakes Terrace residents, team members and visitors were deep in the Halloween spirit Oct. 31 when the Sarnia long-term care community hosted a costume party to mark the occasion.

A variety of colourful and creative costumes were worn by participants and the hard work everyone put into their outfits was evident, says Tara Klompstra, Twin Lakes Terrace's life enrichment manager.

“Staff went the extra mile to dress up in phenomenal costumes, making the day one residents would enjoy and a day they could look back on with Twin Lakes Terrace pride,” Tara tells S&R today.

“A little friendly competition may have set the bar a little higher, too.”

There were a myriad of costume themes and designs from both residents and team members, Tara says.

Solange Rail and Jan Beatty, who dressed as a pair of “jailbirds” in old-time black-and-white striped prison uniforms, won top honours among residents for their design.

“These ladies laughed their way through Halloween together,” Tara says.

A group of team members used the Wizard of Oz for inspiration to design their costumes, which included the characters of Dorothy, the Wicked Witch of the West, the Cowardly Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and Glinda the Good Witch.

This group won the contest for staff costumes.

“We chose a group theme that would be recognizable to the residents and put a smile on their faces all day long,” says registered practical nurse Lauren McCarthy, who played the Tin Man.

“The chance to get creative with my team was so fun and well worth the little extra efforts this Halloween season.”

Resident Margaret Marut says in addition to the event she enjoyed spending time with family and seeing the approximately 65 children who popped by in the evening dressed in costumes to get some Halloween candy.

“This is the most fun I've had in three years,” she says.
