Engaging events saw large-scale participation and got residents socializing

While it was cold and grey outside throughout much of January, inside Landmark Village the atmosphere was bright, cheery and filled with fun, thanks to the many engaging activities the life enrichment team created for residents.

Brent Hart, the Sarnia senior living community's fun co-ordinator, says he and the rest of the team work hard each January to fill the calendar with fun activities and events for residents, since the cold, cloudy weather that usually accompanies the month can give some folks the winter blues.

With this in mind, Brent and the Landmark Village team focused on creating socials to get residents out of their rooms and mingling with each other.

Socials the Landmark Village team hosted for residents in January included:

- An Elvis social celebrating the King of Rock 'n' Roll, who would have turned 89 on Jan. 8
- A beer-tasting social, where residents got to sample different brews
- The “silly social”, which encouraged residents to dress in their favourite silly clothes and read jokes
- A “tea and trivia Tuesday”

Along with the socials, team members organized Landmark Village's monthly wine-and-cheese party to welcome new residents and there was also a karaoke event that proved to be a big hit with everyone.

“I've been amazed by the turnout for the socials, and the room can get pretty loud at times which is great because that means everyone is having a good time and interacting with one another,” Brent tells S&R Today.

Brent says February also promises to be a fun-filled month, with Valentine's Day, live music and the annual fundraiser for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (HSF) planned for the month. This year's HSF fundraiser will feature a dinner-and-dance evening.

“There is never a dull moment,” Brent says.
