When a nighttime fire broke out at Fairwinds Lodge on Jan. 15, 2023, the Sarnia retirement community's 120 residents were suddenly without a home.

And that's when team members from Trillium Villa Nursing Home, which is across Michigan Avenue from Fairwinds, sprung to action.

In the cold and darkness, team members working that night – as well as some who came in on their own time – helped first responders from Sarnia Fire Rescue evacuate all 120 Fairwinds residents to Trillium Villa, a Steeves & Rozema long-term care community, where they stayed until other living arrangements could be made for them.

Fortunately, all Fairwinds residents and staff made it out safely.

Once Fairwinds residents were at Trillium Villa, team members accounted for each person to ensure they arrived safely. The Trillium Villa team also helped residents who would be staying with family members make arrangements to be picked up.

When it came time for nominating people for Steeves & Rozema's 2023 Above and Beyond Award, Kim Van Dam, the Steeves & Rozema Group's vice-president of long-term care, immediately thought of Trillium Villa team members and their heroism.

“While (Trillium Villa) was only the first safe haven for all 120 people who were evacuated, the heroism and kindness shown by the night staff and other team members who returned to help is nothing short of amazing,” Kim says in her nomination.

Trillium Villa team members who helped out that night were:

Teresa Amy, RN
Shannon Baxter, PSW
Tracey Bisson, PSW
Jacquie Burnley, PSW
Jo Ann Burnley, PSW
Heather Chappelle, RPN
Laurie Clayton, PSW
Amanda Cottam, RN
Lauren Creighton, RPN (and her boyfriend, Alex)
Jennifer Dunlop, RPN
Angel Ginez, RN
Lloyd Ginez, RPN
Tanya Green, RPN
Stacy Nisbet, RCC
Sam Regan, RPN
Lea-Ann Riddell, manager of resident services
Harry Singh, PSW

The Above and Beyond Award recognizes team members who do more than what's expected of them to enhance the lives of people living in S&R's long-term care and senior living communities, or who go the extra mile to help their colleagues.

For their heroism, the Trillium Villa team was presented with the award during the 2023 Quest for Success awards night last April. Awards were given out in four categories: Above and Beyond, Quality Improvement, Community Service and Volunteer Recognition.

In 2023, S&R handed out first-, second- and third-place Quest for Success Awards in each category. The second- and third-place Above and Beyond Award recipients were Heron Terrace personal support worker Camelia Peia and Village on the St. Clair environmental services team member Tammy Scarpelli.
