When Luis Barbeito moved into Trillium Villa Nursing Home June 17 he had a Stage 2 pressure ulcer on his lower back – and within two months, the Sarnia long-term care community's skin-care team had fully healed it.
At Stage 2, a pressure ulcer is an open wound and is often painful. The Trillium Villa skin-care team immediately went to work with Luis to heal the wound, a process that involved keeping Luis and his daughter updated on the progress being made.
Following skin-care protocol, team members kept the pressure ulcer moisturized and regularly monitored it until the wound closed.
With the help of the Skin & Wound app, team members evaluated, documented and tracked the wound's healing progress through photos uploaded to the app.
This helps the skin-care team visualize the state of a wound and change the course of care to continue to heal residents' skin issues, explains Ashley Birch, Trillium Villa's resident care co-ordinator.
Luis and his daughter were regularly updated on the progress and shown photos documenting the healing process all the way up to Aug. 31 when the wound was fully closed and healed.
His skin integrity has remained strong since.
Luis commends the skin-care team members for their work, adding his quality of life has improved since the wound was healed.
“I feel much better, my pain is better, I can move and walk better again, and I can sleep better,” Luis says.
Aside from caring for skin lesions, the skin-care team works to prevent them from happening and to educate staff on how they can help keep skin integrity high at Trillium Villa.
Ashley says she has seen a difference in Luis since his wound was healed.
“He is very happy to have his pressure sore healed and is in less pain now,” she says.
