The annual Corn Festival is one of the most awaited events at Heron Terrace, and this late-autumn tradition once again brought the Windsor long-term care community's residents and team members together in a fun atmosphere.
There's also lots of collaboration that goes into making the food-and-fundraising event, which culminates with everyone enjoying corn on the cob together, a success.
Part of the tradition is that residents' council collaborates with the life enrichment team to sell corn at the event. Money raised goes towards providing all residents with a gift on Christmas Day.
Two sacks of corn were purchased this year and residents were tasked with husking the cobs, says Heron Terrace life enrichment manager Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, adding there was lots of fun and laughter.
“One resident said, 'this is a corny job,' and that made everyone laugh, and they started throwing out their own 'corny' jokes,” Sheila tells S&R Today.
“It was an enjoyable day to watch our residents working and laughing together.”
Residents' council vice-president Mario Brissette volunteered to boil half the orders, while the rest of the corn was cooked on the barbecue.
The duty of husking and boiling the other half of the corn was given to two residents who used to be a chef and a corn master. Their expertise came in handy.
“They both know exactly what to do to preserve the freshness of the corn,” Sheila says.
Everyone got to choose how their corn was prepared and there were condiments available, she adds.
Sheila commends the residents involved with prepping the corn for encouraging others to join the event.
“It was a good turnout,” she says.
