Since becoming the life enrichment manager at Twin Lakes Terrace in early March, Kendra Donkers has been working at bringing back some resident-favourite programs at the Sarnia long-term care community, and the Diners Club is one that has been a big hit.

Kendra says the Diners Club, which can be hosted at either lunch or dinnertime, is a monthly event that “residents always looked forward to and talked about” – which is why she wanted to bring it back.

The program sees residents selecting a meal and life enrichment team members prepping and serving it fresh out of the kitchen.

Recently, the residents chose spaghetti as their Diners Club meal, and the life enrichment team went to work making an ingredient list and prepping everything for the day.

And when Twin Lakes Terrace administrator Andrew McClintock heard about what was going on, he suggested a change of plans that would take the residents' meal to the next level: making fresh, from-scratch pasta.

The residents also got involved, Kendra notes.

On the day of the program, residents on one floor prepped ingredients for the main meal, while residents on the other floor made dessert.

Andrew came in the day of the event with pasta dough prepped for the meal and followed up with a cooking demonstration with a group of interested residents, Kendra says.

“He explained to them what he was doing every step of the way and even had some of the residents participate in the prep work,” she says.

Kendra adds that bringing back the Diners Club created a major stir for everyone at Twin Lakes Terrace.

“The excitement of the program drew in residents, staff and even family members,” she says. “It was an all-around enriching opportunity.”
