Four students from Lambton College's gerontology program recently did a seven-week placement at Trillium Villa Nursing Home, where one of their projects was to host a “welcome tea” for the Sarnia long-term care community's newest residents.

On the last Monday of each month, Trillium Villa hosts a tea party for new residents. Team members serve tea, coffee and snacks, and the events are a chance for newcomers to meet other residents, team members, volunteers and family members, explains Essie Lopes, the home's resident service co-ordinator.

Essie and social services worker Emma Crosbie run the program, and Marcy McGlade, the spiritual adviser, who also is also Trillium Villa's photographer, joins in to take photos, Essie explains.

“(During the tea) Emma and I discussed many things about Trillium Villa, including the history of the home and about the new build that will be opening in 2026, (as well as) life enrichment programs, life enrichment calendars, the tuck cart, hair salon hours, the kitchen menu, laundry getting labelled, residents' council and more,” Essie tells S&R Today.

“We also asked the new admissions to introduce themselves, if they would like to.”

Essie adds that some representatives from the Trillium Villa residents' council helped welcome the new admissions and Marcy talked about the Bible study group she hosts every Wednesday.

Students enrolled in Lambton College's gerontology program are working towards careers focused on caring for aging adults and assisting their families.

“In the program, students develop skills in collaborative patient-centred care and inclusive practice,” Lambton College explains on its website.
