A newly created position at Trillium Villa Nursing Home is proving to be successful at ensuring residents' clothing items are not being misplaced after they leave the laundry department.
Personal support worker (PSW) Roxanne English has been taking the lead on this initiative since March. As a result of her work, residents are telling the Sarnia long-term care community's management that they're seeing a reduction in lost clothing, says Caroline Brant, Trillium Villa's manager of resident care.
“She's making an impact; we've already talked with some of our residents and they've found that she's doing a great job and they feel confident in her skills,” Caroline tells S&R Today.
A recent survey of residents and their family members indicated that lost clothing after laundering was a concern. In response, Trillium Villa implemented a solution: assigning Roxanne to put away residents' clothing after it's returned from the laundry department and to interact one-on-one with residents to help resolve any lost clothing issues.
Every afternoon, Roxanne picks up the laundry cart and takes the clothing – marked with residents' names – into their rooms. She then stores the items in their closets or drawers.
If a resident tells her they're missing an item and it's not in the laundry area, she will look in the lost-and-found area to try to recover their items or double check with other residents to ensure the item wasn't mistakenly put in the wrong room.
Prior to Roxanne taking charge of this initiative, there would often be several team members trying to find missing clothing. By streamlining the process, one team member can dedicate time to speaking with residents about issues and recovering lost items.
Roxanne says she's also seeing the positive results from the change.
“I think this is working out a lot better now that it's just one person; we're not seeing as many complaints about missing items,” she says.
