Afton Park Place's life enrichment team kicked off the first day of summer on June 20 with a day of gardening, a “beach party” and fundraising for a worthy cause.
For the morning program, Moira – whom life enrichment manager Candice Vrskovy describes as “volunteer extraordinaire” – helped residents and life enrichment team members Lexie and Agatha get the Sarnia long-term care community's gardens planted.
“The residents had a blast getting their hands in the dirt and making our raised gardens look amazing for summer,” Candice tells S&R Today. “Moira is an absolute blessing to us here at Afton. We can always count on her for any activity assistance that we might need around the home. She really is a superstar.”
The afternoon featured a “beach party” that was highlighted by karaoke and Creamsicles. Life enrichment team member Marjorie was behind the microphone encouraging residents, family members and staff to sing and dance along, Candice notes.
“A few of the residents really got into the karaoke spirit, especially when we played some Broadway show tunes,” Candice says. “There was singing, a lot of dancing, flower leis, a sombrero and, of course, Creamsicles.”
The day ended with the drawing of winners from the residents' council fundraiser raffle. Council members chose to donate a portion of the proceeds to the Inn of the Good Shepherd’s Back to School Kit program, which helps local families ensure their children have school supplies in September.
“Our residents' council enjoys giving back to our community, especially when it involves child and youth programs,” Candice says, adding that residents' council representative Allen “did an amazing job” selling tickets.
“We doubled our goal. We'll be able to purchase a lot of supplies for the kits with the money raised.”
