The S&R Group recently collaborated with the Region of Waterloo at a job fair that connected people searching for employment opportunities with companies looking for new recruits.

The event, which was held at the Family Centre in Kitchener, was hosted by Muslim Social Services Waterloo Region (MSS), was aimed at helping connect new Canadians and other job seekers with meaningful employment.

Representing the S&R Group were HR talent acquisition specialist Mahyar Garmsiri and Stephanie Paddock, the executive director at Waterloo Heights, an S&R seniors living community in Waterloo.

Mahyar says many people visited the S&R booth, and at the end of the day, more than 300 people submitted resumes.

“With each person who visits, we take the time to speak with them and understand what their career interests are,” Mahyar tells S&R Today.

“When I get back from job fairs, I take the time to review each resume with my notes on their career interests and match them to the right managers.”

At the end of the event, Mahyar says people were still queuing at the booth, waiting to speak with him and Stephanie – and they accommodated everyone.

“We wanted to spend time with the job seekers who showed the initiative to come out to meet employers, so we stayed late after the event had ended to speak with everyone who was in line and did not get a chance to meet us,” Mahyar says.

In an interview with EBY News, Duaa Al-Aghar, the executive director of MSS, said the event was well received.

“We have almost over 1,500 so far, and people are still waiting outside.”

From a recruitment perspective, Mahyar says job fairs provide valuable insight into the current job market and help him make informed decisions.

“I get a chance to see a sample in one point of time of what type of job seekers looking for new opportunities, and it's a great opportunity to connect with the public to get our name out there,” he says.

“We do a lot of good work for our community and we try to provide the best resident experience we can, so I will take any opportunity where I get a chance to talk to job seekers about all the hard work our team members do and try to find people who want to contribute to the same mission we are pursuing.”
