Trillium Villa Nursing Home acquired a new five-burner Weber barbecue this summer, and food service manager Brandy Charlton got to be the first person to fire it up and give it a try during a recent cookout at the Sarnia long-term care community.

The menu, created by the food service team, included hamburgers and jumbo hot dogs with an array of toppings, including lettuce, tomatoes, onions and pickles.

The burgers and hot dogs were served with a Dixie-style coleslaw and potato chips. For dessert, the team served fresh-cut watermelon.

Brandy says the food was a huge hit with the residents.

“The residents said they could smell the barbecue aromas throughout the home and just loved being offered freshly grilled meals,” she tells S&R Today.

In keeping with the barbecue's theme, music filled the dining room with a playlist that included the Beach Boys to help get everyone in the summer mood, Brandy adds.

Colourful menus were provided to residents, and they “really enjoyed” reading the list of choices, Brandy says.

The afternoon was followed by a performance from Taryn Ployart.

“It was the first time this band had joined residents at Trillium, and residents just loved the music style,” Brandy says.

Residents were thankful for the fresh-grilled lunch and are looking forward to the rest of the fun summer barbecue events, Brandy says.

Brandy says on top of the food, music and fun, the weather couldn't have been nicer.

“The weather was perfect, and the sun shined in through the windows of the dining rooms, adding to the pleasure of the day,” she says.
