Lanark Heights recently hosted a Hawaiian- and Caribbean-themed celebration featuring tropical food, live music and an evening dinner that combined tropical flavours and festive summer fun.
More than 50 of the Kitchener long-term care community's residents participated in the event, notes life enrichment manager Karla Verdesoto.
“Our residents were eager to enjoy summertime to the fullest – so we delivered,” she tells S&R Today.
In preparation for the event, the life enrichment team transformed the bar station into a “festive tropical food station,” Karla says, adding that she collaborated with the food services team to prepare mango smoothies and fruit skewers that “were a big hit” with residents.
In keeping with the theme of festive tropical fun, residents and team members dressed up for the occasion in their favourite warm-weather attire.
The event included live music, which Karla says kept the energy high throughout the day.
In the evening, the food services team prepared a Caribbean dinner, which also received a lot of fanfare. The menu included grilled chicken with tropical salsa, Potatoes O'Brien (pan-fried potatoes with onions and bell peppers), vegetables, and mango mousse cake for dessert.
Karla says the event was successful at bringing residents and team members together in the fun and festive atmosphere that Lanark Heights provides for special events.
“It was a fantastic event, and a perfect way to celebrate the summer season,” she says.
