When Heron Terrace hosted Community Engagement Day for the second straight year, it was more than just an event, it was “a meaningful opportunity” to bring together residents, staff, families, volunteers and community leaders, says Mervat El-Ainain, the Windsor long-term care community's volunteer co-ordinator.

An important highlight of the day was a visit from a representative from Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie's office, who joined in the celebration and presented Heron Terrace with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of the home's commitment to the community, Mervat notes.

The event invited people from the local community to visit Heron Terrace and learn about the home and the S&R Group's culture.

“The doors of our home opened early in the morning to welcome visitors, giving them the chance to learn more about Heron Terrace and the services we provide,” Mervat tells S&R Today.

The celebration included music and hot dogs that were freshly prepared and served by the life enrichment team. Adding to the warm and lively atmosphere, a St. John Ambulance therapy dog was also there along with its handler, “bringing smiles, comfort and excitement to all,” Mervat says.

One touching moment came when a resident proudly showed a visiting community leader her garden, explaining how she waters the flowers every morning, Mervat says.

“It was a beautiful reminder that behind every program and activity, there are real stories and meaningful connections being made.”

Volunteers played an important role in making the day a success, Mervat adds.

“Our dedicated volunteers were also at the heart of the day, offering their time and support to ensure the event was truly special,” she says.

Mervat says Community Engagement Day achieved its goal of bringing Heron Terrace and the local community together.

“The day was filled with laughter, shared meals and heartfelt conversations that reminded us how important it is to build bridges between our home and the community we belong to,” she says.

In 2024, the Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA), which advocates for long-term care providers across the province, celebrated the first Community Engagement Day “to highlight the importance of community, connection and care,” according to the organization's website.
