Westmount Gardens residents visit new Humane Society facility
Animal-loving residents tour the new shelter, meet furry friends and donate handmade toys

A group of Westmount Gardens residents and team members recently got a first-hand look at the Humane Society of London & Middlesex's (HSLM's) new facility, which opened earlier this year.
The group was given a detailed tour of the building and got to visit with the animals who are waiting for a new home. Residents enjoyed meeting the dogs, cats and even rabbits, explains Adnan Resh, the London, Ont., long-term care community's life enrichment manager.
“We made sure we took animal lovers, and boy did they ever enjoy it,” he tells S&R Today, adding that one of the residents was a past HSLM volunteer.
“Our tour guide, Victoria, did an amazing job talking about just about every single thing, from what each room and area is used for to how animals get adopted, as well as about the vet clinic and the volunteers.”
The group brought lunch, which they enjoyed in one of the meeting rooms, and afterwards there was a game of animal trivia.
Prior to the visit, residents made toys that were brought to HSLM for the animals to play with, Adnan notes.
“This trip meant even more since the residents spent a lot of hours creating enrichment crafts for the animals,” he says. “I was given instruction sheets on how to make a few crafts for the animals to play with, and we had many arts and craft programs to make those enrichment toys.”
Adnan says the trip to HSLM was a major highlight for residents and was an outing they won't soon forget.
“I even saw a resident who I haven't heard talk in a long time start meowing at one of the cats, and I had to take a second look to make sure I was hearing correctly,” he says. “She was happy – smiling and meowing.”
