Since joining the nursing rehabilitation program at Heron Terrace, resident Gerry Halmos has made strides towards his goal of improving his transfers and walking short distances.
When Gerry started the program at the Windsor long-term care community in November 2024, he required a full-lift transfer and was non-weight-bearing, meaning his legs could not support him.
Once he joined the program, he practised his range-of-motion and transfer training exercises with the nursing rehab team, significantly improving his core strength, says volunteer co-ordinator Mervat El-Ainain.
It's Gerry's work ethic that Mervat says is helping him reach his rehabilitation goals.
“Gerry is very determined and always practises his nursing rehab exercises with enthusiasm,” she tells S&R Today.
After months in the program, Gerry increased his sit-to-stand strength enough to meet the required lifting standard. The rehab team brought him into the wellness room, where he began standing between the parallel bars to practise his transfer training exercises.
And from there, Gerry continued to make progress in the nursing rehab program, Mervat says.
Today, Gerry is able to make sit-to-stand transfers with only two staff members assisting him. He can walk up to 40 steps at the parallel bars and has even started walking 10 steps in the hallway with his walker and the rehab team, Mervat adds.
Gerry's goal is to be able to transfer with just one staff member and walk short distances with his wheeled walker, a feat Mervat says she's confident he will achieve.
“Keep up the great work, Gerry,” she says.
