A Christmas tradition at Landmark Village is helping ensure fewer people in Sarnia go cold this winter.

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, residents and team members at the seniors living community filled the “mitten tree” with knitted winter clothing that's destined for the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

The mitten tree, a long-standing holiday tradition at Landmark Village, is a Christmas tree set up each year to collect donations for local charities that support people in need of clothing and food.

Throughout the year, residents knit items such as mittens, scarves, socks and hats, which are then placed on the tree during the holiday season.

“We ended up with a good amount to donate this year that went to the Inn of the Good Shepherd to be given out how they saw fit,” Brent Hart, Landmark Village's activity manager, tells S&R Today.

One surprise this year was a well-crafted sweater vest that one of the residents made. It appeared one day at the mitten tree, but no one knows who made it, Brent says.

While no one has stepped forward to take credit for making the dark red patterned sweater vest, Brent says a lot of work went into making it, so he is tipping his hat to the unsung hero.

“I'm not a knitter, nor can I crochet, and I find that impressive and, I'm sure, time consuming,” he says.
