Resident Doreen has been keeping busy as Twin Lakes Terrace's very own letter carrier.
Doreen recently approached some of the Sarnia long-term care community's team members and said she was looking to find a new job for herself.
After talking things over, Doreen and team members decided she could play an important role at Twin Lakes by delivering the mail each day, explains Kendra Donkers, the home's life enrichment manager.
Kendra says being Twin Lakes Terrace's official letter carrier has been “the perfect fit” for Doreen.
“She takes great pride in her new responsibility,” Kendra tells S&R Today, adding that Doreen says being a letter carrier is helping her stay active while fulfilling an important duty.
Once the mail arrives each day at Twin Lakes, Doreen goes door to door delivering the envelopes to residents.
And, it turns out, Doreen has a “special connection” to delivering mail, Kendra notes.
In talking with Doreen, team members learned that her father as well as one of her uncles had worked as letter carriers, and her son had been a paperboy.
“She feels that this sense of service runs in the family,” Kendra says.
Kendra says the Twin Lakes Terrace team strives to support residents' interests, and staff were happy to help Doreen find a fulfilling role that contributes to the home.
“Our team is committed to working alongside residents to discover opportunities that foster independence, engagement and joy,” Kendra says. “It's amazing how something as simple as delivering the mail can strengthen connections and bring added meaning to each day.”
