Resident interests, community connections shape 2026 programming at Southgate Village

Resident feedback drives activities, with more outings and local partnerships planned

Clockwise from top left, a puzzle program, a beach party and a Boggle group were some of the favourite programs at Southgate Village in 2025.

Programming at Southgate Village in 2026 will be shaped by resident interests and a renewed focus on staying connected to the local community, says Valerie Judas.

Valerie, the fun co-ordinator at the Kingsville, Ont., seniors living community, says residents are eager to explore the town and take part in local outings and activities, with more of that planned in the year ahead.

“Getting out more often is our goal for this year,” Valerie tells S&R Today. “Essex County has a rich diversity of activities and places of interest. I love travelling and exploring the county I was raised in.”

When it comes to deciding on places to go and things to see, as well as in-home programming, Valerie says top priority is placed on residents' suggestions, which help her craft new programs and remove the ones that are no longer popular.

“I always listen to the residents,” she says. “I try very hard to please them. If many residents do not like something, we no longer do it.”

Valerie says residents enjoy outings and, once spring arrives and the weather warms, there will be more walking programs – a particular favourite – in the community.

“Feeling part of the community is a goal here at Southgate,” she says.

Valerie is also creative when it comes to developing programs based on residents' interests. In 2025, some programs that proved to be big hits included a beach-themed day in March, weekly Boggle sessions and a puzzle program.

“New programs are always on the go here,” she says. “I enjoy trying something new and seeing how it flies.”

Valerie notes that most of the residents are community-minded and have served in the community in some capacity, so keeping community connections is a priority in 2026.

Some ideas she is exploring include bringing local groups and services to the Village throughout the year to keep the community spirit strong.

“I aim to keep that connection going,” she says.
