Heron Terrace was decked out in green March 17, when residents, families and team members came together to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a full day of themed activities.
Many residents at the Windsor long-term care community eagerly await St. Patrick's Day, and this year was no exception, says Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager.
For example, ahead of St. Patrick's Day, one resident, Alex, asked his sister to bring him a green hat, a green beard, a temporary tattoo and a special mug so he could have a green beer, Sheila notes.
Jack, another resident, is a long-time fan of St. Patrick's Day and always makes a point of dressing up for the occasion, Sheila says. His sisters, who are always supportive, helped Jack choose an outfit to wear this year, she notes, adding that once Jack had his costume on, he had the “biggest smile” across his face.
“He truly enjoys and looks forward to St. Patrick's Day every year,” Sheila tells S&R Today.
Residents living in Heron Terrace's second-floor neighbourhoods played bingo with lucky coin prizes for St. Patrick's Day and also enjoyed live music with green ice-cream floats.
They wrapped up the day with a pub night that included green beer, potato chips and lots of shared laughter, Sheila says.
St. Patrick's Day was also a chance for new team members to experience how much fun everyone has during special occasions. One new team member, Tulip, shared how “exciting and fun the environment was,” Sheila notes.
“As a new member of the team, she found it incomparable – seeing how enthusiastic everyone is in celebrating and making sure our residents truly have a great time,” Sheila says.
“For me, this is the real success. I am truly proud to have an amazing team who always brings joy and creates a positive environment, making sure to make a difference every day.”
