Heron Terrace honoured its volunteers with an appreciation day at the Windsor long-term care community, presenting certificates and gifts in recognition of their service.

The event was held April 29, just after National Volunteer Week, which was April 19-25. The week is marked by events nationwide that celebrate volunteers and all they do to enrich the lives of others. This year marked the 85th National Volunteer Week.

For three consecutive years, Heron Terrace has nominated 10 volunteers to receive a certificate of recognition from the Ontario Association of Residents' Councils for their dedication to residents and their work that helps enrich the experience of living at Heron Terrace.

“(We want to) recognize the kindness, dedication and compassion of our amazing volunteers who continue to bring joy and meaningful connection to our residents every day,” Sheila Dela Pena-Romero, Heron Terrace's life enrichment manager, tells S&R Today.

Working with social worker Zach and volunteer co-ordinator Mervat, the Heron Terrace life enrichment team organized the event in the Heron Terrace community room, where the certificates, along with gifts, were presented to volunteers by administrator Athena Aird.

To complete the celebration, cake, pizza, fruit and veggie platters, pastries, and coffee and tea were served, Sheila says, adding the event brought the Heron Terrace community together.

“It was heartwarming to see so many smiles as volunteers, students, residents' council members, staff and families gathered together for friendly conversations and appreciation,” Sheila says.

Several volunteers shared their thoughts on the event and what it meant to them.

Volunteer Jane said she was pleased to meet volunteers and students who have recently joined the volunteering team. She was especially surprised and thankful to see a “beautiful” volunteer appreciation cake, Sheila says.

Helen, a family member who is also a volunteer, expressed gratitude, saying seeing her name on a certificate made her feel appreciated. She added the food and gifts were “wonderful bonus blessings.”

Sheila adds that volunteers make an important difference in the lives of residents and staff at Heron Terrace.

“We are truly grateful for all our volunteers and the love they bring to our home,” she says.
