In recent weeks, Heron Terrace residents and team members have been taking full advantage of “fun and engaging” outings that have provided opportunities to explore local shopping centres and spend time with family and friends, says Sheila Dela Pena-Romero.
Sheila, the Windsor long-term care community's life enrichment manager, says two recent excursions have proven to be big hits with residents.
The first was a trip to Tecumseh Mall, where residents spent the day shopping. Prior to the outing, residents prepared shopping lists to help them stay organized and make the most of their visit, Sheila notes.
At the mall, residents browsed stores and purchased items. For one new resident, it was her first time participating in an outing, and her family, who joined the group, later told the Heron Terrace team they had “truly enjoyed the trip,” Sheila adds.
After shopping, the group gathered for coffee and doughnuts, sharing laughter and conversation while capturing special moments in photographs.
“It made the experience even more special for everyone involved,” Sheila says.
Residents were then treated to a second shopping excursion, this time to a local Walmart. As with the mall outing, residents enjoyed browsing and shopping for items they needed or simply wanted for fun.
The trip also included lunch, where residents shared a meal together, adding to the enjoyment of the day, Sheila says.
“Both outings were a great success, filled with smiles, social connection and a strong sense of community,” Sheila says. “Residents returned with happy memories and a renewed appreciation for the joys of spring.”
