Lanark Heights spent a full month celebrating one of summer's favourite fruits: the strawberry.

Residents of the Kitchener long-term care community dedicated four straight weeks to strawberries because they “absolutely love” the berry, explains Karla Verdesoto, Lanark Heights' life enrichment manager.

In honour of the month, Lanark Heights' reception area featured a large strawberry display welcoming everyone who walked into the home.

Then there were the events.

Team members organized a strawberry social featuring strawberry shortcake made with fresh berries and live music. Several family members joined their loved ones and staff members for the celebration, Karla notes.

Given the warm weather southwestern Ontario has experienced in recent weeks, staying hydrated has become more important than ever, so strawberries were incorporated into a special beverage: strawberry lemonade, which residents enjoyed.

Even a manicure program incorporated strawberries into some “extra special designs” for residents, Karla notes.

Strawberries also found their way into the kitchen, where residents baked a special strawberry-flavoured bread that produced delicious results.

“The aroma filled the home, and everyone enjoyed tasting it in the afternoon,” Karla tells S&R Today. “It became a wonderful opportunity for reminiscing, socializing and enjoying something they had created themselves.”
