St. Andrew's Terrace residents don't need to leave home to go bowling – they can just head to the activity room.

Thanks to the creative thinking of the Cambridge long-term care community's life enrichment team, there's now an in-house Monday night bowling league, and residents are having lots of fun participating in it, says Dana Blaber, the St. Andrew's Terrace life enrichment manager.

The life enrichment team recently obtained a 10-pin bowling kit, and every Monday night, the pins and a ramp for the ball to roll down are set up for league play.

One of the main factors making this program so popular and fun for residents is that games are geared to the abilities of each resident to ensure success, Dana says.

During bowling nights, life enrichment team member Mona makes adjustments for residents to ensure they can participate. For instance, if a resident needs to use their elbow to roll the ball, she will set up the ramp aimed at the pins. All the resident has to do is give the ball a nudge and the ball rolls towards the pins.

“She is always eager to find a new adaptation” to help residents, Dana says of Mona.

Volunteers Ross and Leo are also always on hand to help make the games fun for residents.

“These two have been long-standing volunteers at our home and make the evening so fun for the residents,” Dana says.

“They are always cheering them on, providing encouragement and a little friendly competition, and picking up the pins for the next bowler.”

Bowling kits can be ordered online from places like Amazon, Dana notes, adding that bowling is a program she recommends other long-term care communities fit into their activity calendar.

“Bowling is one of our most popular programs, and our incredible team that supports this program makes it so special,” she says.
