Lanark Heights residents enjoy summer fun with a cherry flavour
Beach fun, Splash Day and cherry treats made for a memorable summer

Summer brought plenty of fun, laughter and a little cherry flavour to Lanark Heights, where residents enjoyed everything from beach-themed activities and crafts to a “Splash Day,” barbecues and travelling treats.
The season was marked by several summer-inspired programs, including sit-and-dance exercise with summer vibes, seashell art workshops, a “very popular” sunglasses craft and a travelling refreshments cart that delivered a variety of cherry-flavoured treats, explains Karla Verdesoto, the Kitchener long-term care community's life enrichment manager.
One of the highlights of the season was Splash Day, when residents took over both patios for an afternoon of water balloons, laughter and a little friendly splashing.
The warm-weather fun continued that day with Lanark Heights' annual barbecue, giving residents and team members another chance to enjoy summer together.
Team Appreciation Week also added to the festivities, with special activities, dress-up days, cookies and prizes helping recognize staff members for their dedication to residents.
The “travelling treats” mobile carts, which delivered cherry-flavoured refreshments, were also a success, Karla notes.
“The cherry ice cream cart and cherry spritz cart made their way through the home, bringing something special directly to our residents,” she tells S&R Today.
Karla jokes that the residents “may be getting a little spoiled now.”
“At residents' council, they are already asking, 'What's next?' We love it because it shows us they are excited and looking forward to what is coming each month,” she says.
Team members took extra care to ensure Lanark Heights' home areas were colourfully decorated “to bring each theme to life,” Karla says.
“One of our goals is to make sure the monthly theme isn't only experienced during our large events,” she says.
“From group programs to smaller activities and one-to-one visits, we try to incorporate the sights, colours, music, conversations and experiences of the theme so that every resident has an opportunity to be part of it.”
