Residents, families and community members all came together at Afton Park Place June 25 for an evening of motorin’ and music.

The Sarnia Street Machines made their second annual appearance at the Sarnia long-term care home, parking 18 eye-catching classic and modern automobiles out front for all to see. They were joined this year by the Border Lite Trio who performed classic and country songs.

“We thought, why not jazz it up and bring in music?” life enrichment manager Stacy Petrie says, explaining the addition of the local trio.

It proved to be a good decision and the evening was a real crowd pleaser, with approximately 60 people present at any given time during the two-hour event.

The outdoor car show and concert offered the best of both worlds when it comes to activities — variety and convenience.

“It was something different for the residents. They really didn’t have to go too far but they could still go outside and enjoy some entertainment and see the cars,” Petrie says.

“It was something that could involve everyone.”

This includes community members, who learned about the event from flyers handed out around the neighbourhood and on the trio’s Facebook page.

“That’s what we were looking for, to have the community come and mingle too,” Petrie says.

“We were hoping they saw Afton Park Place as a positive environment and a nice place to live.  . . . It was raising awareness that this is more of a home, this is the residents’ house.”

And just like at any home, people were welcome to enjoy some food as they socialized with one another. The tasty fare provided by the home included pulled-pork sandwiches and coleslaw, cupcakes, watermelon, and beverages. The food was a token of appreciation to the Sarnia Street Machines and Border Lite Trio for their volunteerism.

Petrie says the summer celebration garnered a lot of positive feedback, especially from residents, who were so excited that they can’t wait for next year.

In the meantime, photos taken of residents participating in this year’s event will provide memories of this summer fun. The trio is also coming back to Afton Park Place in September to perform.

“We loved them,” Petrie says.
