A family picnic in the park makes for a perfect summer day. And that’s what Trillium Villa residents experienced on Aug. 18.

“Usually every year we try to do something that we can invite family to,” says Laura Eydt of the Sarnia long-term care community’s life enrichment team. “This is the first year we had it at Canatara Park, and it was a success.”

All the elements came together for one great, fun outing, Eydt says.

“The food was good, the music was good, we had family come to meet with the residents and the (Sarnia) Street Machines.”

Members of the Sarnia Street Machines brought their classic automobiles to the waterfront park for residents and their families to see, no doubt generating plenty of memories of past experiences and days gone by. Paula and the Cornhuskers performed live music, and a catered lunch featured items from a submarine sandwich shop and salads from Trillium Villa.

“It was a perfect day for what turned out to be a wonderful event,” Eydt says.

Approximately 75 people participated in the summer celebration, which the life enrichment team decided to move into the community from Trillium Villa where it was held in 2013.

“We were brainstorming and it came up that we should do something in the park because it is the summer and we can make use (of the park),”  Eydt says.

The life enrichment team did considerable organizing for the picnic, from ensuring families were invited and tracking RSVPs to planning for residents’ specific dietary needs. The event was supported by Trillium Villa’s resident council.

Residents were bused to Canatara Park, taking the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and amenities of the community and connect with community members like the Sarnia Street Machines volunteers. “It’s just nice to get out and have a change of scene,” Eydt says.

The best part was being able to have a big event where family could come and enjoy time with their loved ones, she says.

“They all had a great time.”
