S&R lives up to its mission and values in 2014

Community and corporate events focus on engagement and 'creating communities that are good for life'

The Steeves & Rozema Group had another year marked by community and corporate events underscoring the organization’s values and mission of “creating communities that are good for life.”

In March, Steeves & Rozema once again participated in the annual CANstruction Sarnia-Lambton show and food drive in support of Sarnia’s Inn of the Good Shepherd, an adult and family emergency shelter.

The 3,100 cans donated by Steeves & Rozema were purchased with money raised through a carnation and cupcake sale at company properties in Sarnia. Head office also made a donation. Support was also provided in the form of time that the Steeves & Rozema team could dedicate to CANstruction.

As part of the contest, which was held at Lambton Mall, the team arranged the cans in the shape of a birthday cake, in honour of Sarnia’s 100th anniversary of the city’s incorporation.

Kim Drury, business manager for Steeves & Rozema’s Huron Enersave division, says CANstruction is a fun, team-building event, but it also provides a “big wake-up call” for everyone.

“The fact we can raise this much food in an event seems overwhelming but the fact that it’s only enough food for a month really brings the need into the public eye,” she says. “Everyone says, ‘Wow, that’s a ton of cans,’ and it is a ton of cans but it only lasts for a month.”

In November, the organization’s “star performers” and new managers from across southwestern Ontario gathered in Point Edward, just outside of Sarnia, to attend Core Values Day.

Every year Steeves & Rozema invites representatives from all divisions to attend the event for a day of interaction, fun and learning. The “star performers” are team members who have consistently demonstrated commitment to the organization’s core values: authentic, passionate and committed.

The core values were created several years ago to summarize the traits of Steeves & Rozema employees.

“They are our culture, they are what we stand for, they are what makes us work,” human resources assistant Marci Breault says of the organization’s staff members.

“Our Core Values Day is to celebrate these qualities of our people and our company. That’s important because (the core values) are what drives us.”

Another crowning achievement for Steeves & Rozema in 2014 was on Dec. 6, when the organization took top prize for its float at the Kinsmen Christmas Parade of Lights. This is the eighth consecutive year Steeves & Rozema has earned a prize for a float entry.

The organization enters a float in the parade every year, and the process of building the design and parading it through the streets of Sarnia is a major part of Steeves & Rozema’s culture.

“There’s so much work that goes into it, and it would be nothing if it weren’t for the dedicated group at head office,” says executive assistant Heather Campbell.
