Waterloo Heights was transformed into a cinema on Saturday (Feb. 21) when about 25 residents from the retirement community gathered in the activity room to watch the 1988 Tom Hanks’ film Big.
The home has screened movies in the past, but with its new video equipment, staff members want to increase its regularity, says Maia Hillen, the home’s activity and marketing director.
For the program, which was led by volunteer Christine Warren, the home created a cinema-like atmosphere for residents, complete with high-definition viewing on a large-screen TV with closed captioning for people with hearing impairment.
And, of course, everyone was served refreshments such as popcorn, chocolates and drinks.
The idea to revamp the movie program came after Waterloo Heights contacted Steeves & Rozema head office to see about having the home’s old video equipment replaced.
IT personnel provided suggestions and not only helped Hillen find good deals on equipment, but also helped set everything up.
“We don’t have our own movie theatre in the home, but this is the next best thing to it,” Hillen tells S&R Today, adding she’s happy with the engagement level the program received on Saturday. “We had a very good turnout.”
To make the most of the program, residents are being asked to make suggestions for films they want to see, and staff members will buy the DVDs.
