Team effort is ‘creating communities that are good for life’ across international boundaries

Steeves & Rozema’s mission of “creating communities that are good for life” sometimes crosses international boundaries.

In early October, Steeves & Rozema head office and Rosewood Manor, a Steeves & Rozema retirement community, signed on to each sponsor a child through Compassion Canada, a charitable organization dedicated to long-term support of children living in developing nations.

Two children are benefiting from funds raised by Rosewood Manor and Steeves & Rozema: Jose, a 14-year-old youth from Colombia, and Nicole, a nine-year-old girl from Honduras.

Rosewood Manor executive director Janice Horley says the retirement community wanted to sponsor a child living in a developing country for a long time, but the challenge was to find a reputable organization with a good track record.

Steeves & Rozema administrative assistant Caryn Taylor began researching charitable organizations and found Compassion Canada.

Rosewood Manor management then met with Rosewood Manor residents to discuss the idea and they jumped on board.

“It was quite exciting for them because some residents have done this in the past, so it’s nice that they can continue on doing that with us now,” Horley tells S&R Today.

Residents have since written a letter to Jose and they have received one back from him.

The sponsorship costs $50 per month. In addition to helping fund basic necessities for the children, the cost also ensures each child receives gifts for Christmas and their birthdays.

Residents and staff members can donate independently, and Rosewood Manor has also hosted events such as a turkey raffle and dog fashion show to raise money. Rosewood Manor activity director Bev James has also made gift baskets to raffle.

“We’re way ahead of the game already; we have about three months saved, and we will continue fundraising,” Horley says.

Additionally, everyone who comes through Rosewood Manor’s front doors will see a poster board with photos and information about Jose and Nicole, and visitors may donate as well.

“We have made sure that it’s a focus right at the front door,” Horley says.

Taylor notes that the sponsorship will continue to grow.

“(Rosewood Manor) is the first home to start this initiative, but the rest of our retirement homes will be following suit in the near future,” she says.
