St. Andrew’s Terrace in Cambridge is one of the recipients of a donation from the Royal Canadian Legion of Galt, Branch 121, this year.

A cheque for more than $8,000 was presented to the long-term care home during a volunteer appreciation event on April 16.

The funds will be directed to purchasing much-needed equipment for residents of the home, including high-low beds, adaptive aids for eating in the dining room and over-bed tables, volunteer co-ordinator Debbie Forget says.

“The legion has been supporting us for years,” says Forget, noting Branch 121 has now contributed more than $41,000 in combined funds to St. Andrew’s Terrace.

Forget has played an important part in making the legion aware of the needs at St. Andrew’s Terrace. Each year she speaks with both residents and management about the latest equipment requirements at the home. She then crafts a wish-list letter for the legion outlining the needs and cost of each item.

The presentation from the legion was made during a Breakfast of Champions organized by St. Andrew’s Terrace to thank all of its volunteers. About 90 people joined the morning event, which featured a buffet breakfast.

“One of the big highlights was that we invited the legion members to come as well, which gave us an opportunity to give them breakfast and to have everyone meet them,” Forget says.
