The Steeves & Rozema Group Scholarship Program helps staff members’ children and grandchildren with their post-secondary studies.

Marci Breault loves the task of informing the winners of the Steeves and Rozema Group Scholarship each year.

“It’s just amazing to hear the voices of these young adults when you call them and say, ‘Congratulations, you were selected to receive a $500 Steeves and Rozema scholarship.’  Or to see the smiles on their faces when they receive their cheques.

“There is a sense of relief that this little bit of financial assistance is there. And there is pride,” says Breault, human resources assistant with the Steeves and Rozema Group.

With a view to encouraging Steeves and Rozema team members’ children and grandchildren (including step children and step grandchildren) to continue their post-secondary education, the Steeves and Rozema Group Scholarship program has been granting scholarships since 2011. To date, more than 30 scholarships have been awarded.

This year, another six $500 scholarships will be awarded to family members of Steeves and Rozema employees.

While a scoring matrix is followed by the selection committee to select the winning scholarships, Breault offers some advice for those applying.

“The details on the application do count, so please answer all the questions, provide as much information as possible and if you are unable to use a computer to type your application out, be sure you print or write clearly,” she says.

“And don’t be afraid to include attachments like reference letters or other accolades you may have received. It’s a chance for you to brag about yourself and what you’ve accomplished… and it’s not all about the marks you received academically. It’s about the effort you put in.”

Breault also notes that emphasis is given to those who volunteer either within the Steeves and Rozema long-term care and retirement homes or the health-care and geriatric field in general.

While she is not part of the selection committee, Breault does play a role in organizing the scholarship program, as well as supporting those who submit their applications.

“I like being able to help those who submit their applications, letting them know if there is anything else they need to add and so on,” she says.

“Any way I can help, it’s nice to be able to do so.

“I have a background in helping youth in business, so it really speaks to my heart to be able to continue to do that in my role with Steeves and Rozema,” Breault adds. “It’s another way that Steeves and Rozema is (fulfilling its mission of) ‘Creating communities that are good for life’.”

The scholarships go to young people under age 25 who are studying at an accredited post-secondary institution. Those seeking to apply must have proof of acceptance to an accredited post-secondary institution or program. Applicants can be in any year of their study.

Scholarship winners are also invited to the Annual Awards Celebration at head office, held in April each year.

Qualifying applicants may submit their applications annually and are eligible to receive the award twice during their schooling.

This year, applications to the Steeves and Rozema Group Scholarship Program must be received at head office by Aug. 12.

Copies of the application are available from management and the HR Dept. Please contact Marci Breault for more information: marci_breault@srgroup.ca, 519-344-8829 ext. 365.
