Managers from the Steeves & Rozema Group’s Sarnia retirement communities are singing the praises of Lorraine Barr, a shuttle driver who goes above and beyond to make residents’ outings memorable experiences.

Lorraine has been a shuttle driver for S&R retirement communities for about a year. What makes her unique is that she has taken the time to research and discover fun facts about different historical places around Sarnia, so when she is out for an afternoon drive with residents, she is able to discuss points of interest with them.

“Our residents are loving it,” says Jennifer Beselaere, the fun co-ordinator at Twin Lakes Terrace. “I think it is pretty awesome that she is doing that all on her own (and) she is really making residents’ afternoon drives that much more enjoyable.”

Sometimes Lorraine and the residents will get out and walk around points of interest. Knowing some residents may not have eyesight that’s as good as others, Lorraine will take photographs of historical plaques they pass so residents with visual impairment can read them, Jennifer notes.

“It’s just really neat that she has gone out of her way to do that for the residents,” she says.

Bev James, the fun co-ordinator at Rosewood Manor, says Lorraine has been a “wonderful” addition to the team.

“She’s an excellent person, and all the residents are always telling me how wonderful the drives are; how she always goes somewhere different, how helpful she is on shopping trips,” Bev says. “We all feel we are very, very fortunate to have her.”

Natalie Cataford, the fun co-ordinator at the Residence on the St. Clair, characterizes Lorraine as “an asset” to Steeves & Rozema retirement communities. Aside from her dedication to residents, Lorraine is also positive at all times, she says.

“(Lorraine) is patient with the residents, very helpful and accommodating and always, always safe,” Natalie says.

“I don't ever think I've seen Lorraine without a smile on her face, either. We have our country drives every Friday morning, and she always has a full bus, so I can definitely agree that our residents are loving it, too.”
