For 13 years, Lucia Teresi has been a valued volunteer at St. Andrew’s Terrace, bringing dedication to her work along with a contagious laugh and sense of humour.

Lucia, who has a visual impairment, volunteers two hours a day, two days a week at the Cambridge long-term care home. She volunteers from April to November, opting to spend the winter months in Acapulco, Mexico.

“Lucia has been a volunteer at St. Andrew’s Terrace since 2004 (and) she has done various things since she has been here,” Debbie Forget, the home’s volunteer co-ordinator, tells S&R Today.

“She works in laundry, but mostly she works in in the office assisting the office staff. She is our paper shredder and she does a wonderful job.”

Lucia says she wanted to volunteer because she “wanted a job out of the house.” She says she is glad to have found the opportunity at St. Andrew’s Terrace and has enjoyed her years of service as a volunteer.

“I’ve learned a lot about the staff and the residents,” she adds.

There are two ways everyone knows that Lucia is in the house, says life enrichment manager Sara Byma.

“We always know when Lucia is here because you can hear the paper shredder humming away and she will be laughing,” she says.

Debbie says the top qualities Lucia brings to St. Andrew’s Terrace are her dedication, her personality and her sense of humour.

“She enriches the lives of not only the people that she volunteers with, but also the management and the team members, too,” Debbie says, adding every volunteer at St. Andrew’s Terrace plays an important role.

“Our volunteers are all very valuable.”

April 23-29 was National Volunteer Week 2017. The week was marked by events nationwide that celebrate volunteers and all they do to enrich the lives of others. This year marks the 76th National Volunteer Week.
