The rain may have been pouring down in Chatham-Kent on May 24, but that didn’t stop a group of dedicated staff members from Residence on the Thames from riding the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada’s Big Bike in support of the charity’s annual fundraising drive.

Team members from the retirement community raised $1,425.50 on May 16 at a quarter auction they hosted in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. While money is normally raised by Big Bike riders, this year the home tried a different approach and it paid off, says fun co-ordinator Tina Drew.

Tina, who was one of the Big Bike riders, notes this is the third consecutive year Residence on the Thames has put together a team to ride in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Using the quarter auction method of fundraising for the event has been more successful than having individual riders raise money, she adds. (See June 14 story for more details)

“If you do a fundraiser together and make it a team effort, then it just seems to work a little better,” Tina tells S&R Today. “(Before the quarter auctions) we would be lucky if we got $500.”

The Residence on the Thames’ Big Bike team name is Riders on the Thames. Looking ahead to next year, Tina says staff members are hoping to have T-shirts made for the 2018 Big Bike ride.

“They’re already planning it out,” she says.

As part of the Big Bike campaign, teams ride a 29-seat bicycle through Canadian communities every May to raise money for the foundation and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke.
