Village on the Thames resident’s touch of love credited for blooming Christmas cactus

Plant’s flowers bloom for first time in 10 years, after Marie O’Hara starts caring for it

Village on the Thames resident Marie O’Hara poses proudly with a Christmas cactus that’s blooming for the first time in 10 years.

Call it the miracle at Village on the Thames.

A Christmas cactus had sat in a flower pot in a corner at the Chatham-Kent seniors-living residence without its pink flowers blooming for about 10 years.

Then one day, a few weeks ago, housekeeping staff member Tammy McLean approached activity director Tina Drew to tell her the cactus was now blooming.

It seems resident Marie O’Hara had been quietly watering and caring for the plant. Marie and her husband live down the hallway from the cactus, and one day Marie decided to start caring for the plant.

Evidently, Marie’s loving touch made a difference. Marie had been watering the cactus for several weeks before it started to bloom, Tina says.

“Tammy said Marie had been taking care of it, and it’s alive,” Tina tells S&R Today.

“So, I went and knocked on Marie’s door and asked to have her picture taken with the Christmas cactus. The cactus always looked good; it just never flowered.”

While Marie told Tina she doesn’t think the cactus’s flowers are blooming because of her work, Tina says there is no other explanation.

So, Tina says, that’s the official story: Marie brought the cactus’s flowers back to life.
